Whether you’re a brand new student or returning to university life, it’s never been more important to look after your health.
September means thousands of students arriving at university. In between the partying, socialising and navigating you’ll have to contend with, there’s something that might not cross your mind until it’s too late: Fresher’s Flu.
While it tends to be nothing more than a bad cold, it could put a stop to your fun. New germs from around the globe combined with the Swine Flu pandemic mean it’s never been so important to keep a check on your health.
We’re exposed to health advice every day and it’s vital when you reach university. Chances are alcohol will be involved in your first few weeks but constant hangovers and little sleep, combined with a poor diet is a recipe for disaster.
Firstly, register with a health centre. Hopefully you won’t have to visit it but it’s easier to fill in forms when you’re head isn’t filled with cotton wool. Secondly fill in a HC1 form – many students never realise they’re entitled to discounted health care.
As far as diet goes it’s back to the five-a-day rule. Eating healthy foods will help your immune system fight off nasties and help you recover if you do become ill. Tempting though it will be to live off takeaways, home cooked meals could be the difference between freshers fun and a week in bed.
Lastly it’s what everyone learns before they reach junior school – basic hygiene. Wash your hands before eating, clean cooking surfaces and try (I know it’s difficult) to keep your environment clean i.e. tidy your room!
Most health centers are currently not allowing entry to cold and flu sufferers. If you are concerned about swine flu you can call the swine flu information line on 0800 1513513 or visit one of the following websites for information:
